The concept of sustainability, which has been much sought in recent years, is linked to the substitution of exhaustible sources of energy for renewable sources. Into this way of sustainability fits the concept of biorefinery, which aims to convert biomass into biofuels as well as bioenergy and bioproducts of commercial interest, seeking to find a solution that combines economical viability with an environmentally friendly production.

Several countries have been standing out as a great entrepreneur of energy agriculture, mainly due to the diversification of cultivated biomasses and the edaphoclimatic conditions favorable to their cultivation. Crops such as cotton, rice, bananas, potatoes, coffee, sugarcane, eucalyptus, corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, coconuts and others have been drawing attention not only for their productivity, but also for the generation of vegetable and industrial residues produced.

These residues are mostly used for a number of agronomic benefits, for example, in controlling weeds, retaining moisture, improving the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil. However, due to the significant amount of waste generated, its composition and, consequently, the chemical and energetic potential of the plant fiber, it is possible to use part of this waste in a more noble end, both from a chemical and an energetic point of view, without any damage to the agronomic benefits, through processes that involve the different biorefinery platforms – chemical, biochemical and thermochemical.

This concept of biorefinery has been gaining increasing prominence with great investment potential and has been identified as one of the most promising routes for the creation of new industries. This vision of technological development will have great relevance and importance in what concerns the evolution of the agricultural and industrial sectors of the world biomass, directly reflecting the generation of employment and income in different segments of society.

Thinking of this optimistic scenario, which involves the integral and sustainable use of biomass through the different biorefinery platforms, we decided to create BSS Magazine – Biorefinery Sustainable Solutions. The main objective is to contribute to the wide promotion and dissemination of research and technologies that guide the different routes of biorefinery on the world stage. There will be four editions per year and will be available free for reading and download in different countries and continents around the world. Our team is made up of professors and researchers recognized worldwide from different countries. The future of biorefinery has begun!
